Why Root Canals are Heroes Not Villains in General Dentistry

Oct 10, 2023 | General Dentistry, Restorative Dentistry

Did you  know that Root Canals are one of the most common yet highly misunderstood (and often dreaded!) dental procedures. Yes!

In fact, the American Association of Endodontists (AAE) devotes the whole month of May every year to Save Your Tooth Month. That’s because root canals are actually a hero procedure in general dentistry that can clear infection and save your teeth.

After all, there is no denture, bridge, or implant that will look, feel, or function as well as your natural teeth. Saving your teeth means a more natural appearance, effective chewing, and normal bite and sensation, all while protecting other teeth from excessive wear or strain.

Let’s review some of the most common questions and concerns we see from patients regarding root canals — and why we recommend this procedure if and when possible.

What is a root canal?

A root canal is a type of endodontic therapy that is often recommended if tooth pulp and nerves become infected or damaged. This may occur if injury or decay reaches deep into the tooth, past the outer enamel layer.

To restore the health of the tooth and avoid the need for extraction, our skilled dentists at SMILE! Advanced Dental Care remove the infected and injured tissues from within the tooth, clean the tooth, and fill it with a medicated material.

We then cap the tooth with a restoration, such as a dental crown, to return the tooth to its original shape and structure. In most cases, a root canal can be completed in only one or two comfortable visits to our office in Summerville, SC.

Is a root canal painful?

You’ve likely heard the common expression, “I’d rather have a root canal,” which is used when comparing worst-case scenarios. But, actually, you’d rather have a root canal in the best of cases!

That’s because, contrary to popular myth, modern root canals are completed with minimal discomfort thanks to our advanced techniques, tools, and anesthesia.

We prioritize creating a comfortable experience at our office. And, while you can expect a bit of numbness and soreness after the procedure, the discomfort is generally quite mild and subsides within a few days.

How do you know if you need a root canal?

Root canals are often needed for a deep cavity, a cracked tooth, a faulty crown, or issues stemming from a previous filling.

If you notice severe tooth pain — especially while chewing — or extreme sensitivity to hot and cold foods, it may be an indication that there is a bigger problem requiring a root canal. Swollen or tender gums and deep decay or darkening of the gums can also be indicative of an infection requiring a root canal.

We always urge our patients to act immediately if they experience symptoms of severe pain or swelling. Our emergency dental care services can accommodate cases, even on weekends.

How much does a root canal cost?

The important thing to remember is that a root canal is generally covered — at least partially — under most dental insurance policies.

The cost does vary, depending on the tooth affected and how complex the problem is. That said, this type of endodontic treatment and restoration of the natural tooth is generally less expensive than the alternative of having the tooth extracted. That’s because an extracted tooth needs to be replaced with an implant or bridge to restore your smile and maintain your oral health and generally requires multiple office visits.

Root canals have a very high success rate and many root canal-treated teeth last a lifetime.

With modern techniques and effective anesthesia, patients who have root canals are six times more likely to describe it as painless than patients who have a tooth extracted, according to the AAE.
