How Fluoride Treatments Protect Tooth Enamel in Pediatric Dentistry and Beyond

Pediatric Dentistry Fluoride

When it comes to fighting tooth decay, there are a number of things you can do to maintain a healthy smile. And while six-month dental cleanings and exams are universally recommended for oral health, some treatments are specific to age and other lifestyle factors.

Such is the case for dental sealants and also for fluoride.

Perhaps you remember having fluoride treatments as a kid at the pediatric dentistry office near you. If you have kids now, you might be wondering if fluoride is necessary for them, too. Maybe you’re even wondering if you need fluoride yourself!

Let’s take a closer look at this treatment.

What is fluoride?

Fluoride is a mineral that is naturally found in water and in many foods — along with some toothpastes and mouthwashes — and it helps strengthen your teeth and protect them from decay.

This is especially important for young, developing teeth to ensure they are strong and healthy.

And while we all get a certain amount of fluoride through the course of daily life, dedicated fluoride treatments can be a preventative step to ensuring optimal oral health.

Who needs fluoride treatments?

Generally, fluoride treatments are most appropriate for kids as their permanent teeth grow in.

That said, at Smile Advanced Dental Center, we make sure to evaluate where our pediatric dentistry patients live — and have lived — to determine the best treatment. Some water sources are fluorinated while others are not, and this is just one factor we consider.

For adults, we only use fluoride in specific cases when teeth are especially prone to decay or if a patient is receiving radiation in the head or neck area, which can weaken tooth enamel.

How is fluoride applied?

Fluoride is available in the form of a gel, varnish, or foam — although, at our practice, we prefer to use the most advanced treatment gel. It stays on the teeth for only about 60 seconds and then it is promptly washed off.

If you have more questions about fluoride treatments or our family dentistry and pediatric dentistry services, give our office a call and let’s ensure you’re doing everything you can for yourself and your family to promote beautiful, healthy smiles.
